Computer viruses are becoming a fact of
life on the Internet. The bad news is that they can destroy all of your critical computer
data in an instant. The good news is that you can detect and remove even the most
insidious viruses by taking a few important precautions. The following document provides
useful information regarding a new virus that is currently circulating, and plenty of
helpful links to virus information and anti-virus protection software.
A new "date-activated" virus called "W95.CIH"
has been identified. A date-activated virus hides on your system until the programmed
activation date. If your computer is infected with W95.CIH, the virus will delete the data
on your hard drive the first time you boot up on July26th, which is this Sunday. (Newer
versions of this virus will activate on the 26th of subsequent months.) The W95.CIH virus
only affects computers running Windows 95 or Windows 98 operating systems, however, we
recommend that all Internet users install and use virus protection software.
Our friends at C|Net recently published features about protecting
your computer from many different kinds of harm, including viruses. You can find the
articles at:
The site listed above provides step by step instructions to help you download, install and
run a program which will identify and remove W95.CIH from your Windows 95 or Windows 98
computer.
Please Note:
MindSpring does not provide technical support for virus protection software. If you
require help with virus protection software you will need to contact the manufacturer of
the software program you are using.
