Adding a Guest Book to your web site

Why use a Guestbook?

People sign guestbooks to leave their public "calling card" on your web site, giving you and your other visitors some valuable data. A user who leaves an entry in your guestbook may offer comments, their e-mail address, a web page URL, and/or information about where they live or what they do. With that kind of information, you might build a list of contacts or use the feedback to improve the site. Other users, meanwhile, have a chance to see who else has stopped by and what they thought.

An example of the Guestbook tool.

Configuring your Guestbook

To access the Guestbook tool, log in to the MindSpring Control Panel at http://control.business.earthlink.net/ using your web hosting account information, and under Toolbox, select Guestbook.

To install the Guestbook, click the Install button.

The four files below, found in your "www/guestbook" and "cgi-bin" directories after you've installed the Guestbook, are the heart of your guestbook. Make any changes you'd like -- either by downloading and updating them or through MindSpring's FileManager tool.

  • guestbook.html - This is where entries will be shown; the title, page colors, etc. may be edited. Do not erase the <!-- Begin --> line, the script needs it.

  • guestlog.html - This is a short log which keeps track of the domain and time of entries as well as any errors that may have occured.

Make sure the permissions for guestbook.htmland guestlog.htmlare 666 (rw-rw-rw-).

  • addguest.html- New entries to the guestbooks are made through the form on this page.

  • guestbook.pl - This is the perl script which adds entries.

The permissions for guestbook.pl should be 755 (rwxr-xr-x).
