Using EarthLink's File Manager

What is File Manager?

EarthLink's File Manager allows you to make direct updates to files and directories on your site and, best of all, you do it through your Web browser!

With the EarthLink File Manager, you can:

  • Change file or directory permissions

  • Create new files and directories

  • Rename, move, or delete files

  • Edit the contents of a text file

  • Upload files (only in certain browsers)

Accessing the File Manager

To Access the File Manager:

  1. From the Toolbox drop-down menu, choose File Manager.

The File Manager will appear in the lower frame of your browser window.

Editing Files and Directories

When you open the File Manager you will see a screen that looks something like this:

Uploading a File

This feature uses "form-based file upload", which is available in Netscape Navigator 2.0 and above, as well as Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02 and later. Only one file may be uploaded at a time, so if you need to send up several at once, FTP would be the better way to go.

Note: Unlike FTP, you don't need to specify whether something is being uploaded as text or binary. Text files uploaded by Macintosh users through this method won't encounter problems on the UNIX end.

Creating a File or Directory

For this example, we'll use Create A File. These steps are also applicable to creating directories.

To Create a New File

  1. Click the Create A File link.

  2. Enter a name for the file you wish to create into the field under Create A file.

  3. Click the Create File button.

When you click the Create Filebutton, the following will happen:

  • A blank file will be created with the name you specified.

  • A File to Changepage will appear for the file you just created. This is the same page that appears when you click the Edit link of a file.

Since the file is blank, you will want to enter some text or HTML contents for the file.

Directory and File Changing (Editing) Options

When you click the Edit link of a file or directory, you will see a screen that looks something like this:

The Change File Screen
The Change File Screen
  • Change the File:To move or rename the file, click the Move/Rename radio button. To copy the file, click the Copy radio button. Selecting Copy duplicates the selected file under a new name. This option only appears when editing files.

  • Change the Contents of the File:You can change text in the file as you would in a standard text editor. The example in Figure 2 is an HTML file. This option only appears when editing files.

  • Change the Permissions of the File:You can make updates to the read, write, and execute settings. Read more about Changing File Permissions at http://help.mindspring.com/webhelp/features/file_manager/permissions.htm

  • Change: To execute all the changes you've made to the file or directory (e.g. if you've renamed a file and changed its permissions), click the Change button.

  • Delete: To remove the file or directory you're currently viewing, click the Delete button. In the case of directories, Delete removes all contents as well as the selected directory. After clicking the Delete button, you will see a page that asks you to confirm the deletion. If you really want to delete the file or directory you've chosen, click the Delete button on the confirmation page.

Note: The Delete button is not to erase the changes you've selected, but rather to remove the selected file or directory.
