This guide has been written with the novice
in mind. However, we do throw around
some terminology you should know before you begin. We will assume
that you are at least familiar with World Wide Web, FTP, and email.
You should also know how to connect to the Internet and how to use
a Web browser.
Familiarize yourself with the following terms:
CLIENT:
Traditionally
used in the context of a "client-server" relationship. In
the context of the World Wide Web, the "client" is
a
Web browser,
like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. FTP programs such
as WS_FTP or Fetch are another example of a client.
SERVER:
The term "server" is
used both to refer to the EarthLink computer where your Web site
resides, and to a particular software program on that computer that
provides Web or FTP functionality.
CONTENT:
A
generic word in the Web design industry that simply refers to the
stuff that goes in a Web page. It usually refers to the text and images
of a Web page. Many people who formerly called themselves "writers" now
use the more elaborate title, "content developers."
FOLDER/DIRECTORY:
This
manual uses the terms "folder" and "directory" interchangeably
when referring to the file system of your computer or your Web Hosting
account.
URL:
Uniform Resource Locator. A computer
address that usually looks something like this:
http://www.yourecompany.com
.
This manual refers to specific URLs containing demonstrations and
more information. To use a URL, type it into the Location or Address
field of your Web browser and press the
ENTER
key.
