Simply put, a
domain
transfer is moving the hosting of your domain name from one
Internet
Service Provider (
ISP)
to another.
A domain transfer is actually a modification to the domain's
InterNIC record-- specifically
a change in the primary and secondary
nameservers
of the domain. Nameservers are computers that contain information
for domains such as who handles the mail for the domain, where www.domain.com
can be found, where ftp.domain.com is, etc.
When you transfer your domain to EarthLink from another ISP,
the InterNIC will change the nameservers listed for your domain
to EarthLink. Once the nameservers are changed, EarthLink can tell
the rest of the Internet where to find your mail server, webserver,
FTP server etc. (At the same time, your Tech and Billing contacts
will also change to EarthLink.)
Whenever you transfer a domain,
you should expect the domain to be out of service for 1 to 3 days.
If it's critical that your site remain up, make sure you
check the box labeled "initiate my transfer later." This
will ensure you have a Web site both with your old provider and
EarthLink. When the transfer happens (and we have no control over
when it happens),
you will experience a minimal loss of presence. If you check this
box we will begin processing your request for Web space immediately
but will wait for you to contact us before we initiate the domain
transfer.
If you're currently using domain
e-mail
aliases,
or you have an active Web site, the timing of your transfer may
be important. For most customers, there's no problem with
initiating the transfer immediately. Domain Transfers can take anywhere
from one day to two weeks. Read below to learn how you can speed
up this process.
The
first step is to have EarthLink send a template to the InterNIC
on your behalf. This template will contain information you want
to be available about your domain once the transfer is completed -- our nameservers
most importantly.
To initiate a Domain Transfer
Using your Web browser, go to EarthLink's Domain
Registration page:
https://register.mindspring.com/cgi- bin/wsisa.dll/webhost/signup/step1.html
From that page, choose either
Domain Services or
Web Hosting.
Follow the instructions, entering the correct information
as you go.
The result of this process is that EarthLink will have
the information necessary to fill out the template to be sent
to the InterNIC.
The InterNIC will then send e-mail messages to the listed
contacts for the domain (3 and 4 in the table below) asking for
their authorization.
If either the Administrative or the Technical contact
replies with an authorization (from the e-mail address on record
for that contact), the InterNIC will approve the transfer.
You must provide certain types of information when transferring
your domain. Here is an example for a domain, "w1.com":
1) Registrant: EarthLink Enterprises, Inc.
(W1-DOM) 1430 West Peachtree Street NE Suite 400 Atlanta, GA 30309 USA2)
Domain Name: W1.COM3) Administrative Contact: Doe, J. xxxxxxx@EARTHLINK.NET 404-815-07704)
Technical Contact, Zone Contact: Earthlink Domain Registrar
(MSPG-NOC) domains@EARTHLINK.NET 404 815-07705) Billing
Contact: Jane Doe yyyyyyyy@EARTHLINK.NET 404-815-0770
(FAX) 404-815-8805
By making us the
technical and billing
contacts for your domain, you do not lose control or ownership over
your domain.
Rather, this is done as a convenience to our customers, allowing
us to include any registrar fees (such as a renewal of your domain)
on your EarthLink invoice rather than asking you to pay EarthLink
and the registrar separately.
This is the organizational owner of the domain. It can be
a business or an individual. Usually this is your company name.
Your domain name is someone at the organization who can answer non-technical
questions about the domain and the organization's planned
use for the domain name as well as who can approve transferring
the domain if necessary.
The Technical Contact should be someone who can answer technical questions
regarding the domain - DNS, e-mail aliasing, etc. When your domain
is transferred to EarthLink, we will become the Technical Contact for
your domain.
The Billing Contact is the person who handles billing issues
for the domain. When you transfer your domain to EarthLink, we will
become the Billing Contact for your domain.
To change the Technical and Administrative info of your domain name, write
to the current technical contact listed. This e-mail address belongs to
someone who can authorize the transfer. If the technical contact
is not available or the information is incorrect, send us a fax
(
404-287-0883 Attn: Domain Registrar
) on
company letterhead with the following text:
As an authorized representative for
[organization]
,
the owner of
[yourdomain.com]
,
I authorize the transfer of
[yourdomain.com]
to EarthLink's
servers.
Then state your reason for the transfer.
If the domain's Administrative Contact is changing,
you must include the new Administrative Contact information:
Finally, the document must be signed by an officer of the
organization, and include the printed name, title, and telephone
number of this officer.
